Place hold and scan requests

Please note

By borrowing and requesting library resources you accept and agree to comply with the Library Borrowing Conditions.

Placing hold requests

Eligible users can place a hold on an item so that it is reserved for them. Holds can be placed on items that are:

  • on loan to another borrower (this will recall the item and reduce the loan period for the borrower)
  • available at another branch library
  • available on the shelf at your preferred branch library.

How to place a hold request

  1. Find the item you want in Library Search, then click the "Place hold" button.
  2. Select the desired pickup location and submit. Eligible students will also see a home address option to request a postal loan.
  3. Use My Library to check the progress of your hold request and cancel any holds you no longer require.
  4. You will receive an email notification when the item is ready to collect from the hold shelf in the branch library where you requested pickup. The item will be held for you for five days. Those using the postal loan option will be notified by email when the item has been loaned and posted out to you.

How long until my hold is ready

For items that are:

  • on the shelf in the library - they are usually ready within two days, but can take longer if the item gets borrowed before library staff can collect it for you. Once collected by library staff it will be put it on the hold shelf or posted to eligible students.
  • on loan to another borrower - you will be added to a queue for when the item is returned, noting that there may be hold requests by other borrowers ahead of you. Check My Library to track progress.

You will be notified by email when the item is available for you to pickup from the library hold shelf (or has been sent via post for eligible students).

Hold shelf locations

When a hold is ready for you to pickup, the item is placed on a self-serve hold shelf (usually within the course reserve room). Holds are arranged alphabetically by surname (family name), or by full name if you have no family name.

  • Gardens Point Library Level 4, V Block - in room V408 Course Reserve and Holds - located along the wall behind the lifts.
  • Kelvin Grove Library Level 2, R Block - in the printer area (continue past the main staircase on the entry level).
  • Law Library Level 5, C Block (Gardens Point campus) - next to the Library Helpdesk.

Items are held for five days on the hold shelf and will be automatically cancelled if they are not picked up by the hold expiry date.

Placing scan requests of hardcopy material

Eligible users can request scanned copies of material that is only available in hardcopy in the Library, such as book chapters, articles, legislation and cases.

  • There is no limit to the number of requests you can place but copyright restrictions apply to all requests. If a request does not adhere to copyright, it will be cancelled and you will be notified by email.
  • Scans are emailed to you, and are usually supplied within two working days.
  • Requests will be cancelled if an online version is held by the library.

Request scans of book chapters

If you require a chapter from a book that is only available in hardcopy and would like to request a scan:

  1. search for the book (not chapter) in the Library Search
  2. click on the "Only need one chapter?" button
  3. add the details of the chapter you would like scanned and agree to the copyright declaration
  4. check My Library to track progress.

Request scans of articles

If you require an article from a journal or newspaper that is only available in hardcopy and would like to request a scan:

  1. search for the article in the Library Search
  2. click on the "Want a copy" button
  3. agree to the copyright declaration and submit the request
  4. check My Library to track progress.

If you require legislation or a case that is only available in hardcopy and would like to request a scan you will need to:

  1. search for the law report or publication in Library Search (note: do not search for the case citation or specific legislation, you need to find the report or publication where the case or legislation was published)
  2. click on the "Get an article from this journal" button
  3. make sure you enter the details of the case or legislation you want scanned such as the name of the act, legislation or case name and case citation into the title field plus any extra information you have such as volume, date and start page
  4. check My Library to track progress.

For example, to request the case Public Trustee v Nash (1921) 38 WN (NSW) 142, you would need to search for the law report (in this case WN is the report The Weekly Notes) in the Library Search and then click on the "Get an article from this journal" button to go to the request form and enter the case details.
