Borrow and return items
By borrowing and requesting library resources you accept and agree to comply with the Library Borrowing Conditions.
Eligible users can borrow items from any branch library. Find out about borrowing limits, recalls and renewals. Items should be returned by the due date to avoid overdue notices and penalties.
Borrowing in person
Once you have located items on the shelf that you would like to borrow, or you have placed a hold request and the item(s) are on the hold shelf ready for pickup, you can use a library self-loan kiosk to borrow the item. Each branch library has several self-loan kiosks available for use during opening hours:
- Gardens Point Library (V Block) - Level 3 (entry level), Course Reserve room (Level 4), Level 5 and Level 6
- Kelvin Grove Library (R Block) - Level 2 (entry level), Course Reserve room (Level 2), Level 3, Level 4, Curriculum collection and Level 5
- Law Library (C Block) - Course Reserve room (Level 5) and Level 6.
You will require your QUT ID to borrow (or borrowing card for registered community borrowers).
How to use the self-loan kiosk
- Scan your QUT ID barcode (or borrowing card for registered community borrowers).
- Place your items on the platform (up to 5 items at a time) - check the display screen and you should see your items appear on the screen as they are automatically loaned out to you.
- When you have finished, click the 'Finish' button in the bottom right corner of the screen.
- A loan receipt will be emailed to you (this will include information about how to return items). You can also view your loans in the QUT app or online at My Library.

Returning items on campus
You can return items to any library, regardless of which branch you borrowed the item. They can be returned in person using automatic return shelves, return chutes, or via post. You will receive a confirmation email from the Library when your returns have been processed.
Items should be returned by the due date to avoid overdue notices and penalties.
Gardens Point
All items, including Course Reserve items, can be returned using the return shelf located inside the Gardens Point Library (V Block, Level 4, turn right at the top of the stairs). Unlike return chutes where staff still need to process your returns, you can place items on the return shelf and they will be automatically returned and removed from your Library record. This is available during library opening hours.
The Gardens Point return chute is located outside the Library (V Block) entrance (opposite Merlo Coffee). This is available both during and outside library opening hours.
Course Reserve items can be returned during opening hours using the return chute located inside the Library (entrance level, opposite Merlo Coffee indoor seating area).
Kelvin Grove (including Creative Industries Precinct)
All items, including Course Reserve items, can be returned using the return shelf located inside the main entrance of the Kelvin Grove Library (R Block, Level 2, on the left as you walk in the main entrance opposite Gather Cafe & Bar). Unlike return chutes where staff still need to process your returns, you can place items on the return shelf and they will be automatically returned and removed from your Library record. This is available during library opening hours.
The Kelvin Grove return chute is located outside the Library (R Block) near the main entrance opposite Gather Cafe & Bar. This is available both during and outside opening hours.
Course Reserve items can be returned during opening hours using a special return chute located inside the Library (entrance level, near the lift).
There is also a return chute in Z6 Block in the Creative Industries Precinct.
Law Library
All items, including Course Reserve items, can be returned using the return shelf located in the Law Course Reserve room (Level 5, C Block, next to the Library helpdesk). Unlike return chutes where staff still need to process your returns, you can place items on the return shelf and they will be automatically returned and removed from your Library record. This is available during library opening hours.
The Law Library return chute is located inside the library entrance (straight ahead as you walk through the entrance). This is available during opening hours only. Outside of these hours items can be returned to the Gardens Point Library.
Returning items by post
You are welcome to post your loans back to the Library (please note you will need to pay for postage). Please ensure you allow enough time for the item to be received by the Library before the due date.
