Students

QUT students engage with a wide range of copyright-protected materials throughout their studies.

QUT Library provides access to databases, books, and journals under specific licensing agreements, which outline how subscribed content may be used. For all other materials, the Australian Copyright Act 1968 applies.

Under the Copyright Act, students may use copyright material for educational purposes in assignments and exams, provided they use only a reasonable portion and the content remains within the QUT environment (e.g. Canvas, QUT Readings, or internal submissions). Students may copy a reasonable portion of a work, defined as:

  • Up to 10% of the total number of pages in a book (if the book contains 10 or more pages), or one chapter, whichever is greater.
  • One article from a periodical publication, or more if the articles are required for the same research or course of study.

Note that if the work is made public, such as being published on a website, different copyright rules apply.

According to QUTs Intellectual Property policy, students retain copyright in any work they produce during their time at QUT, unless it forms part of a commercial project, in which case different conditions may apply.
