Academic Skills Advisers provide learning services and resources to assist students in developing academic literacy (study skills and strategies).

Academic literacy is the knowledge and understanding of academic strategies and processes, and their appropriate selection and application, that enable students to study effectively and efficiently. These concepts and sklils include:

Responsibilities

Advisers are based in Reference Services, Kelvin Grove Branch Library but work across the campuses with students and faculty. They also collaborate with librarians in cross-campus teams to provide an integrated approach to student learning services in academic literacy/study skills and information literacy/research skills (integrated literacies), and contribute to the planning, development, evaluation and implementation of the Library's teaching and learning services and resources.

Student consultations and referrals

Students requiring individual assistance with study and learning skills should be referred to the Learning and Research Desks in the first instance. If they require further assistance, they will be directly referred to an Academic Skills Adviser to make individual appointments. Priority for individual appointments will be given to students who are referred from a Disability Adviser, Counsellor, Lecturer, Tutor or the Learning and Research Desk staff.

International Students and Students from non-English speaking backgrounds who need individual appointments for study skills assistance need to contact International Student Services (PH:3138 2019 or email: issadvice@qut.edu.au)
