Academic Skills Advisers provide learning services and resources to assist students in developing academic literacy (study skills and strategies).
Academic literacy is the knowledge and understanding of academic strategies and processes, and their appropriate selection and application, that enable students to study effectively and efficiently. These concepts and sklils include:
- Time/Task Planning
- Notes/Recording
- Reading/Comprehension
- Thinking/Argument
- Reading/Writing
- Groupwork/Teamwork
- Communication
- Exams
- Academic integrity
Responsibilities
- Direct learning assistance to students through individual consultations, email, and telephone
- Development and facilitation of learning workshops and seminars as part of the Library’s extra-curricula integrated literacies teaching program
- Diagnosis and identification of academic skills needs of students in generic and discipline-specific areas
- Development and review of strategies to embed academic literacy into the discipline curriculum, in collaboration with librarians, learning support staff and faculty
- Development of online and printed resources to support student learning in academic skills
- Evaluation of trends, patterns and issues with regard to learning services
Advisers are based in Reference Services, Kelvin Grove Branch Library but work across the campuses with students and faculty. They also collaborate with librarians in cross-campus teams to provide an integrated approach to student learning services in academic literacy/study skills and information literacy/research skills (integrated literacies), and contribute to the planning, development, evaluation and implementation of the Library's teaching and learning services and resources.
Student consultations and referrals
Students requiring individual assistance with study and learning skills should be referred to the Learning and Research Desks in the first instance. If they require further assistance, they will be directly referred to an Academic Skills Adviser to make individual appointments. Priority for individual appointments will be given to students who are referred from a Disability Adviser, Counsellor, Lecturer, Tutor or the Learning and Research Desk staff.
