Faculty Liaison Librarians and Academic Skills Advisers can work with you to develop your students' graduate capabilities, their ability to demonstrate:
- effective communication in a variety of contexts and modes , including effective written and oral communication with discipline specialists and non-specialists and in cross-cultural contexts (academic literacy)
- the capacity for life-long learning, including searching and critically evaluating information from a variety of sources using effective strategies and appropriate technologies (information literacy)
Information literacy
Ideally, information literacy should be embedded into and across the curriculum. Your Liaison Librarian can:
- work with you and course design teams to embed information literacy into the lifelong learning for your students;
- design and deliver specific lectures, tutorials and training sessions within your courses and units to facilitate skills and concept learning in information research;
- assist in designing assessment that gauges information literacy learning as well as content learning.
The Library has developed an Information Literacy Framework and Syllabus to guide the ongoing development and delivery of the University's curricula with respect to information literacy. Find out more about information literacy strategies for developing students' generic capabilities.
The Information Literacy Framework and Syllabus also provides a framework and methodology by which to use criterion referenced assessment (CRA) to determine acquisition and attainment levels of information literacy.
Academic literacy
Academic Skills Advisers provide learning services and resources to assist students in developing academic literacy (study skills and strategies). You can refer any student to the Academic Skills Advisers for a consultation or contact them regarding strategies to embed academic literacy into the discipline curriculum. They also offer free workshops throughout the year for students.
