In 2008, QUT is an institutional member of two major Open Access publishing organisations, BioMed Central and Public Library of Science (PLoS). BioMed Central and Public Library of Science (PLoS) both publish Open Access journals using the "article processing charging" model. Read more about Open Access publishing.
This means that QUT researchers can submit manuscripts to any BioMed Central or PLoS Open Access journals and QUT Library will pay the discounted author-fee (as approved by the Library and the University's Research and Innovation Committee). These will be covered by QUT's Prepay membership.
BioMed Central
BioMed Central publishes across the whole spectrum of biology and medicine. It is an independent online publishing house committed to providing immediate free access to the peer-reviewed biological and medical research it publishes. It publishes 180 Open Access journal. All the original research articles in journals published by BioMed Central are immediately and permanently available online without charge or any barrier to access;
A list of the journals available on BioMed Central and those that have impact factors and their citations tracked is available at:

Public Library of Science (PLoS)
Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource. PLoS publishes peer-reviewed, open access scientific and medical journals that include original research as well as timely feature articles. All PLoS articles are immediately freely accessible online, and are deposited in the free public archive PubMed Central.
Public Library of Science (PLoS) publish seven online-only journals, including two high-profile journals in biology and medicine - PLoS Biology and PLoS Medicine. These journals are broad in their scope and publish papers that provide significant advances that will drive their respective fields forward. They have already gained international recognition, evidenced by their enviable journal impact factors (14.1 and 13.8 respectively).
A full list of the 7 journals available via PLoS with the journal's impact factor listed is available at:
Submission process for QUT researchers
- View the journals available via Public Library of Science
- You are strongly encouraged to submit a presubmission enquiry before making a full submission. The purpose of a presubmission enquiry is to solicit rapid initial feedback on the potential suitability of a manuscript for the journal. Staff editors will usually assess these enquiries independently, but may occasionally consult with an academic editor. If you wish to submit a presubmission enquiry, please log into the chosen PLoS Journal website’s online submission system and select "Submit Presubmission Enquiry". The materials that will be required are your contact information, a cover letter (which may include requests to exclude certain peers from the evaluation process), and a referenced abstract (which should include up to 10 key references which put your abstract into context). Authors who receive an invitation to submit their manuscripts will then enter the regular editorial process.
- If your article is accepted for publication, PLoS/Allen Press will send an invoice to you as the corresponding author.
- QUT authors should forward their PLoS/Allen Press invoices to Stephanie Bradbury, Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, and the fee will be paid by QUT Library.
Please contact IHBI Information Manager, Stephanie Bradbury, for more information.
