Researchers are increasingly required to provide evidence of the impact their research publications (and other research outputs) have made. Citation counts are one measure of research impact.

Publishing norms and citation patterns can differ between disciplines. Consequently there are different ways to track and measure research impact across the disciplines.

Your Liaison Librarian can advise you on:

  • The metrics and data sources, relevant to your discipline, that can measure and highlight the impact of your publications and research outputs.
  • The issues and limitations of using these indicators and tools within your discipline.

Tracking Research Impact Workshops inform and provide opportunity for you to explore a range of tools that demonstrate the impact of your work. During NHMRC Project Grant and ARC Discovery Project Grant application rounds, tailored workshops are offered to support applicants in finding information, appropriate to relevant funding rules and instructions.

Measuring Research Impact Guide gives information on various metrics, tools and strategies to enable you to track and monitor your research impact and increase visibility and reach of your publications.

A Research Impact Report can be requested by Assistant Deans Research, Research or Institute Directors for the purpose of supporting large grants (e.g. NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence (CRE); ARC Centres of Excellence; Cooperative Research Centres (Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research), external reviews (e.g. professional accreditations of research groups) and establishment of research centres. Six weeks is required to complete reports. Please contact your Liaison Librarian or the the Library Research Support Team for more information.
