The QUT External Library Service is available to:
- students who are enrolled as an external student (attendance mode = E in QUT Virtual);
- Masters (Research) or Doctoral (PhD or EdD) students living outside the Brisbane City Council boundaries.
- all Faculty of Law Graduate Diploma, Masters by Coursework, Masters by Research and PhD regardless of location

- External studies library guides, containing comprehensive information about all services and help with research and finding information

Postal loans
Books, videos and other material in the Library that you wish to borrow will be posted to you within Australia, free of charge. For information on borrowing conditions and loan periods, please read the Borrowing Guide for QUT staff and students and Gold Card holders.
Students are required to pay the return postage.

Requesting a loan - preferred method
Most external students will be able to request a postal loan via the library catalogue. Search for the item you want and then place a hold on it. To request the item click the
button at the top of the screen. You will need to log into My Library Profile to place the hold. In the Deliver to box, select the "External students ONLY, via post" option from the drop down menu. More information about placing, collecting and cancelling holds.
Requesting a loan - alternative method
If your requests are not accepted through the catalogue, please complete the online form below:

The External Library Service does not post books and other loanable items overseas. Please contact your Faculty to find out if arrangements have been made for overseas students to use local libraries, or enquire in person at the libraries in your area.
Copy delivery service
Electronic copies of book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, cases or sections of legislation will be sent to you. When the copy is ready, you will receive an email with a link to where the copy is stored and a PIN so you can open it. You can download or print it as you wish. Tthe copy will be automatically deleted after it is opened 5 times or 14 days after the email was sent, whichever comes first. You need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the document.

The External Library service will send copies overseas.
Delivery times
We aim to turnaround book and photocopy requests and search requests within 3 working days from date of receipt in the External Library service. During busy periods such as the start of semester (March-April and August-September), the supply time may increase to 5 working days.
The following approximate delivery times apply:
- Postcodes 4000-4699 are sent surface mail, so allow another 2 days
- Postcodes 4700+ and interstate are sent by surface mail or Express Post, so allow another 2 days
- Overseas students are serviced by airmail, so allow at least 7 days
These turnaround times only apply to items that are available in the library at the time the request is received.
External studies library guides

Joining a local university library - reciprocal membership
QUT staff and students, including external students, are eligible to become reciprocal members of many other Australian university libraries under the national borrowing scheme called University Libraries Australia (ULA).
Reciprocal membership usually includes borrowing privileges but borrowing conditions vary across all libraries. Membership does not usually include access to internet and online resources. Membership fees may apply.
