The QUT External Library Service is available to:

  • Students who are enrolled as an external student (attendance mode = E in QUT Virtual).
  • Masters (Research) or Doctoral (PhD or EdD) students living outside the Brisbane City Council boundaries.

Services available for external students include:

Postal loans

Books, videos and other material in the library that you wish to borrow will be posted to you within Australia, free of charge. Students are required to pay the return postage. The External Library Service does not post loanable items overseas.

Read more about borrowing for QUT staff and students.

Requesting a loan online

Most external students will be able to request a postal loan via the library catalogue.

  1. Search for the item you want.
  2. To request the item, click the request button at the top of the screen
  3. Log in to My Library Profile.
  4. In the Deliver to box, select the "External students ONLY, via post" option from the drop down menu

If your hold requests are not accepted through the catalogue, please contact the External Library Service for alternatives.

Delivery times

We aim to turnaround book and photocopy requests and search requests within three working days from date of receipt in the External Library Service.  During busy periods such as the start of semester (March-April and August-September), the supply time may increase to five working days.

The following approximate delivery times apply:

  • Postcodes 4000-4699 are sent surface mail, allow another two days
  • Postcodes 4700+ and interstate are sent by surface mail or Express Post, allow another two days
  • Overseas students are serviced by airmail, allow at least seven days

These turnaround times only apply to items that are available in the library at the time the request is received.

Joining a local university library - reciprocal membership

QUT staff and students, including external students, are eligible to become reciprocal members of many other Australian university libraries under the national borrowing scheme called University Libraries of Australia and New Zealand (ULANZ).

Reciprocal membership usually includes borrowing privileges but borrowing conditions vary across all libraries. Membership does not usually include access to internet and online resources. Membership fees may apply.
