Why is my installation of Endnote not working with Microsoft Word?
The most likely causes of failure are:
- You attempted to install EndNote, but did not have administrator (software install) rights for your PC,
- Two required Add-in files may be missing from the Word STARTUP folder.
1. Installing EndNote (version 10 (EndNote X) example is illustrated)
Microsoft Word should be installed before EndNote.
For the Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP operating systems you need to have full administrator login privileges to successfully install EndNote. Administrator privileges are withheld from users in most QUT schools. The administrator login is only held by Computing Services Officers (CSOs). Contact the IT Help Desk to arrange for installation of the EndNote software.
2. The Cite-While-You-Write (CWYW) Microsoft Word Add-in and template files.
In order for EndNote to communicate with Microsoft Word, two very important files must be in the Word STARTUP folder. These files are:
EN10Cwyw.WordXP.wll - MS Word add-in file for Endnote X
EN10CWYW.dot - MS Word Template for Endnote X
QUT Library recommends the Cite-While-You-Write Microsoft Word Template file and the Word add-in file are moved from the Word STARTUP folder of the administrator installer login profile (Documents and Settings) to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Startup
Copying the two files to this folder will mean any login to the machine can use EndNote with Word.
A successful EndNote installation talks to Microsoft Word
In Microsoft Word a successful EndNote installation will show these two files with their box checked to enable the macros that allows Microsoft Word and Endnote to communicate

Bug fix - Replace the Word Template File
Replacement version 10 Word Template File EN7CWYW.dot
Replace (Overwrite) the existing Word Template file in the Word Startup folder
Using Internet Explorer's right mouse click Save Target As... dialog overwrite the existing Word template file in the:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Startup folder.
Replace the Orginal EN7CWYW.dot Cite-While-You-Write Word Template File
The original MS Word template file didn't allow you to toggle back from Word to EndNote [Alt+1].
Once you install and replace the Word Template file in the Word startup folder and restart you will be need to enable the Institute for Scientific Information macro.

Microsoft Windows XP Operating System
If your existing PC has been upgraded to run the Windows XP operating system, you may need to upgrade your EndNote installation.
Windows XP requires you to run EndNote version 5.0.2 (or later). QUT Library recommends you run the latest supported release, which is EndNote version X.0.2.
