EndNote is software designed for researchers to create a personal database of references found when searching literature for information. EndNote also assists in inserting and formatting references into documents when writing journal articles and theses.
QUT has a site licence for EndNote, which permits current staff and students of the university to use the software both at work and at home. You cannot run two versions of the software (e.g. Versions 7 & X4) on the same computer. The software cannot be made available to family, or colleagues of QUT staff and students. Staff and students may not use EndNote software obtained through QUT after leaving the university.

Obtaining a copy of EndNote X4.0.2
QUT Library supports EndNote X4.0.2 (version 14). New users of EndNote are recommended to use this version.
Endnote X4 is compatible with Word 2010.
To obtain a copy of EndNote X4.0.2, as current staff member or student, you can either:- download and install EndNote for Windows or Mac (see instructions below), or
- borrow the software on CD from any branch library. Check availability of EndNote CDs in the library catalogue

To install EndNote on your own PC or laptop, follow these instructions:
- Check System and Hardware requirements, and Word Processor compatibility for Windows or Mac
- Backup your EndNote libraries, custom styles, filters, and connection files to another location on your PC, a flash drive, and/or a network drive.
- Unformat any documents that have been formatted with EndNote and Microsoft Word. The references in your document will change from their formatted form, e.g. (Smith, 1998) to their unformatted form, e.g. {Smith, 1998 #77}.
- In Word 2007 go to > EndNote > Convert Citations and Bibliography > Convert to Unformatted Citations. Save changes.
- In Word 2003 go to >Tools > EndNote > Unformat Citations. Save changes. - Uninstall current version of EndNote via Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
- Download and install EndNote X4.0.2 software
Instructions Windows The software will not install unless you follow these instructions
1. Go to IT Services Software Downloads and locate EndNote X4.0.2
2. Click the Windows link
3. Save the zip file to your computer
4. Extract all files from the zip file to a folder on your computer
5. Click on install to start the Install processMac
Go to IT Services Software Downloads and locate EndNote X4.0.2
Click on the Mac link to download and install to the Applications folder
Run "Updater" after EndNote is installed
- Copy EndNote libraries, custom Styles, Filters and Connection files to Styles, Filters or Connections folders and any other files (backed up in step 2) to the PC at:
- C:\Program Files\EndNote\ X4
- Or to Endnote Personal folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\My Documents\EndNote\ (Win XP)
C:\Users|[UserName]\Documents\EndNote\ (Vista and Windows 7) - Start using EndNote
If the EndNote tools do not appear in Word, use the Configure EndNote Utility. Access this utility from Start > All Programs > EndNote.

If you upgraded from ENDNOTE 7 - > Convert existing EndNote 7 library
When you open your library for the first time in EndNote X4, EndNote will offer to create a converted version of the library, with a new name. The original library will remain intact. You should keep a copy of the original library and store it in a safe place, in case you later decide to revert to an earlier version of EndNote. You can change the name of the original library.
The references in the new, converted library in EndNote X4.0.2 will have the same record numbers as in the original library in your earlier version of EndNote.
If you upgraded from ENDNOTE 7 - > Reformat MS Word documents
You may need to use the Update Citations and Bibliography command on the EndNote toolbar or menu in Word, to format citations if they were unformatted before upgrading. When you open a Word document which you had been working on while using an earlier version of EndNote, you can continue to add citations to it in the normal way.
Any output Styles, Filters or Connection files that you had been using in an earlier version of EndNote should still work in EndNote X4.0.2.

Version compatibility
Remember if you intend to share libraries when engaging in group work, check that all members of the group have compatible versions.

EndNote X1 installation files: Windows | Mac
The MS Word "Cite While You Write" add-in files are stored in a common folder at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Thomson ResearchSoft\Cwyw\.
EndNote 7.0 for Windows
Install EndNote 7 only if you need to share EndNote libraries with colleagues using version 7.
1. Download (QUT Access account and password required):

2. Install the program by double clicking on setup.exe file.
3. So you will be able to toggle between MS-Word and EndNote with the keyboard shortcut Alt+1
- Overwrite the faulty MS-Word EndNote template file, with the bug-free EN7CWYW.dot file provided above into the MS Word EndNote template folder.
- Paste the MS-Word add-in file EN7Cwyw.WordXP.wll provided above into the MS-Word Startup folder.
