IFN001:AIRS (online mode) is a faciliated online course run over twelve weeks.

Eligibility

Technical requirements

Access to a PC with Internet connectivity, visual software (including Macromedia Flash or similar), and audio and streaming capacity.

Scheduling and duration

Each course runs for twelve (12) weeks, from start date to completion date. As the online mode allows for self-directed learning, students can choose when to undertake their learning within this timeframe (in accordance with prescribed assessment milestones and requirements). The number of hours taken to complete the course is at the discretion of the student. Between 30 and 40 hours is advised. Courses are scheduled throughout the year.

PhD and other higher degree research students wanting course credit for completing IFN001 : AIRS, must enrol in the unit via QUT Virtual. More information.

Literature review

Library services and information resources

  • familiarity with the literature review process and evaluation of professional literature
  • development of a relevant search strategy and an understanding of the processes involved
  • awareness of library services available to postgraduate research students
  • competency with the libray catalogue, including creation of a personal profile
Bibliographic databases
  • ability to search for journal articles and other materials using bibliographic databases, including citation indexes
Advanced internet searching & management techniques and tools
  • awareness of the concepts underpinning the Internet, Internet searching and retrieval
  • extensive use of Internet Explorer to access, contrast, compare and evaluate WWW search tools and resources, including "Deep Web" resources
  • creation of "bookmarks" or "favorites" and transfer/management techniques

Current awareness strategies

EndNote

  • construction of a current awareness strategy, including discussion lists and database search profiles
  • introductory understanding of EndNote bibliographic management software

Assessment

Formal assessment includes preparation of an Information Resource Log, completion of a Reflective Journal and participation in chat sessions and discussion forums.

Built Environment & Engineering students, please note, that the Faculty requires that the mark given by Supervisors for literature reviews be taken into account in the AIRS assessment. In order to avoid unnecessary delay in the reporting of your marks, it is important that you register for, and complete, IFN001 as soon as possible.
