Sometimes when you search a database, you will find a description of an article (an abstract or reference), but not the full text you need. We often have the journal online in a different database, or in print at one of our branches.

QUT Fulltext Finder is a linking service that helps you get hold of complete journal articles. It will also help you locate books, conference papers and other publications found in database search results, by automatically checking against the QUT Library catalogue.

Who can use it?

QUT Fulltext Finder is available to all current QUT staff and students. Due to licence restrictions the QUT Fulltext Finder service is not available to QUT ALIS members.

How do I get to it?

If this service is available in the database you are using, you will see the QUT Fulltext Finder button qut fulltext finder (or the words "QUT Fulltext Finder") next to an item in the database search results. Clicking on the QUT Fulltext Finder button or text link launches the QUT Fulltext Finder service in a new window.

QUT Fulltext Finder is available in Quick Find as well as in over 35 major database services accessible to QUT students and staff. If you have any queries about using QUT Fulltext Finder, please contact the QUT IT Helpdesk for assistance.

What does it do?

Fulltext Finder automatically provides you with a direct link to an electronic version of the item, if available. There may be several links to fulltext to choose from.

If no direct link is available, you will see options to automatically search the QUT Library catalogue for the publication, to be sure you're not missing out on the item you need. For books, you can expand your search and request items from participating BONUS+ libraries across Australia and New Zealand (a free service to all QUT staff and students).

If you really need the item but have not been able to locate it, options are provided to place a Document Delivery request automatically. More information is available on delivery from other libraries.

Are all of the Library's electronic journals available through Fulltext Finder?

Fulltext Finder provides access for QUT staff and students to the majority of the fulltext electronic journal collections subscribed to by QUT Library.

Why full text links to journal articles may not display at first

  • The article is from a new electronic journal, or a collection that Fulltext Finder has not been set up to link to yet.
  • The article you need might only be available in print format. For example, you need a journal article published in 2005, but the Library holds only from 2002 to 2004 electronically.
  • The journal may be embargoed. Some publishers do not offer electronic access to their recent articles for some time; for instance, the most recent three months to two years. Again, there may again a print copy or alternative version of the article you can access if you check the catalogue.
  • The details about the article might be incomplete, inaccurate, outdated, or interpreted wrongly by Fulltext Finder (or the database it is linking to).

Do I need to check anything in my web browser?

JavaScript should be enabled within your browser. Also, if you use a "pop-up" blocker utility, it may block the QUT Fulltext Finder menu window. In this case, temporarily disable your pop-up blocker, or add the site you're searching (where you found the QUT Fulltext Finder link) to your blocker's list of sites from which pop-ups are allowed.

Note: Clients connecting from on-campus should also make sure that the IAS (Internet Access Service) "Keep Alive" popup window is running in the background before connecting to databases set up for QUT Fulltext Finder.

For further advice on IAS and enabling pop-ups, refer to the official Internet Access Service documentation.

Does it work with referencing and citation software?

Some third party referencing and citation software, such as EndNote, can use the QUT Fulltext Finder to search for the fulltext of documents. See How to use Find Full Text in EndNote for detailed configuration instructions. Other referencing software applications are unsupported by QUT however they may still be used with QUT Fulltext Finder. These software applications typically ask for an OpenURL path or OpenURL base URL. The QUT Fulltext Finder path/ base URL is http://sf5mc5tj5v.search.serialssolutions.com/

These applications may also ask for a proxy URL to enable off campus access. The QUT EZproxy URL is http://gateway.library.qut.edu.au/login?url=
