Role
Academic Skills Advisers assist students with understanding, learning and applying effective skills and strategies that relate to and improve academic study, research and writing. These skills include:
- Writing assignments (preparation, planning and structure - not editing and proof reading).
- Effective note taking
- Reading and comprehension
- Working in groups and teams
- Time management
- Preparing for exams
Academic Skills Advisers conduct workshops, develop learning resources and work individually with students.
Priority for appointments is given to students who have been referred by a lecturer or tutor, Learning and Research Desk staff, a Disability Adviser or a Counsellor.
Academic Skills Advisers also work closely with faculty staff to ensure that the academic capabilities are addressed within the discipline curriculum of subjects and courses as part of an overall approach to the development of graduate capabilities as a learning outcome for students. Advisers also play an important role in connecting students to learning resources and other support services in the University.
